HANGARMUSIK
Social integration through orchestral music
„Orchestra. A miraculous sound machine of people”(Nikolaus Harnoncourt)
Difficult times are made easier by music.
In the hardest times, it becomes a necessity!
HANGARMUSIK was founded in 2016 by Leila Weber and Andreas Knapp in the hangars of the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. This project was established to enable children and young people from various different countries and cultures to learn to play classical orchestral music without having any previous musical knowledge. Inclusive joint rehearsal sessions promote all the necessary skills for the children to be able to pick up an instrument and play. This particular project not only promotes cultural education, but also strengthens children’s social skills and inner sense of stability and resilience. In 2021, HANGARMUSIK also facilitated a vital project for nine months in Vial Camp on the Greek island of Chios, an EU migration hotspot. As a social integration project, HANGARMUSIK’s current activities in Berlin also involve children and young people who are from Berlin themselves. In 2022, the organisation’s founders were honoured by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany "for their artistic work, their humanistic commitment and their ability to build bridges".
