HANGARMUSIK

In 2015/2016, more than 3,000 refugees were housed in emergency accommodation in the hangars of the former Berlin-Tempelhof airport. We founded HANGARMUSIK there in February 2016. This special place not only gave the project its name, but is also symbolic of  the shelter that children and young people found here, a shelter in which they could even learn to play string instruments together. Classical orchestral music would fill the hangars in our weekly rehearsals.

In the first year, we rehearsed in Hangars 6 & 7 until we finally found our first home in the "Zollgarage" space. With the opening of the "Tempohome" container village on the airport ramp in 2018, we found ourselves in yet another important rehearsal location. In the following years, we also gathered  in various different accommodation centres for refugees, and the "Zollgarage" remained our main rehearsal venue until 2021.
These days, the "Camaro Haus" provides us with rehearsal rooms and this has become our new home.
